Recap

by

Well, there isn’t a whole lot to recap about “I’d Rather be in Philadelphia.” The episode played out exactly like I thought it would. I think I’d read too much about it and watched too many previews. Anyway, Richard had a heart attack. Lorelai and Rory went to the hospital. Emily showed up and in her usual way went about canceling their plans for the next few weeks, ordering fish, getting Richard’s will faxed to her, etc. Lorelai couldn’t handle that behavior and went off on Emily. Finally Emily broke down and said this is what married people do, they take care of each other and do what’s needed. Meanwhile Logan borrowed a helicopter to get to the hospital and be with Rory. He and Rory went to the house to meet the fish delivery and to pick up Richard’s things. Chris was nowhere to found, even after Lorelai left him message after message.

But Luke was there. And thus the point of the whole episode. Just like her letter said last week, when Luke’s in your life, he’ll be in your life forever. When Chris finally showed up at the end, it was too late. Lorelai had seen what she’d given up. And that promo for next week? WOW. “I want you to be the man I want.” And clearly Chris isn’t the one she wants. OUCH.

Thoughts?

I think the writers are getting too predictable. Of course Christopher would come to the hospital when Luke was there. I understand that Chris was hurt/angry, etc., but I think it is not in his character to avoid her calls all day; he would have gone there to support Rory, if nothing else. I really liked Logan in the episode, although I feel like I am getting set-up for some kind of downfall. I hope not.

I feel like there has been a lot of stalling this season. I go through the whole hour expecting action of some sort, but then at the end, they’re still at the hospital. I don’t know. My husband commented that the show has lost something with the departure of Amy Sherman-Palladino and even though I wanted to believe in the beginning, I think it’s true. Aside from the fabulous pop culture references, it seems like the characters are just on treadmills, waiting for the finale. Or, as with this episode, waiting for sweeps.
