“Bon Voyage” Recap
Was anyone else crying? I seriously was and I’m not ashamed to admit it! I am so sad to see this wonderful show exit. I know it hasn’t been up to par this season, but overall, I’ll look back on the series as one of the best I ever watched. I thought I’d do the recap by character.
Rory — Rory took a job as a writer for an online magazine following Barrack Obama’s campaign. So she has three days to tell everyone goodbye and pack up and leave. She has to cancel her rollercoaster trip with Lorelai. This was very sad to me. I know it was true to real life, but I was hoping it would end with the two of them having one last hurrah before Rory entered the real world.
Lane — Lane has been severely under used these past few seasons. I was very glad to see her have a nice moment with Rory. This is when I started to cry. But as far as BFFs go, where was Paris? I would haved loved to see her and Rory’s goodbye. (And yes, I know we got a nice scene between them last week, but I wanted more).
Richard and Emily - We got to see a final Friday night dinner. I loved that Emily was trying to come up with excuses to continue to see Lorelai. More tears when Richard called Lorelai “remarkable” and more tears when Lorelai told Emily she’d see her at dinner. The family dynamic has always been the core of this show and I was glad to see it handled so well at the end.
The townsfolk - Everyone had their little moment - Sookie, Kirk, Taylor, Babette, Miss Patty — I’ll miss all of you (well maybe not Taylor). I was surprised they didn’t show a goodbye with Sookie and Rory. Sookie practically helped raise Rory.
Luke - Luke went all out for Lorelai and Rory. And he did it all because he “just wants to see you (Lorelai) happy.” Awww…. finally those two are back on track. It is a shame we won’t get the Lorelai/Luke wedding (With the chuppah he built for her). But we can leave that up to our imaginations, can’t we? After all, at its core, the show was about Lorelai and Rory and it was fitting that it ended with the two of them in Luke’s diner.

I wasn’t crying, but I was almost there. I sniffed through the theme song, the Rory/Lane exchange, and the scene where Luke was feverishly sewing up tents. The worst part for me was when Emily said to Rory, something like, “I guess this is the last time we’ll see you for who knows how long.” And I burst out, “It’s the last time I’ll see YOU for who knows how long!” My husband kept looking at me like I should get a grip. All in all, I think the show bowed out gracefully and I LOVED the last shot - pulling back from the diner. I’ll miss it, but at least I have the DVDs when I need a fix.

I teared up a few times throughout the show, like when Emily told Rory she was proud to be her grandmother. I sort of wish that they hadn’t shown the Lorelai/Luke kiss in the preview, it would have been a nice surprise.
I still can’t believe it is over, although I suppose it was time.
