Aerie Tuesdays

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

What is the deal with this “Aerie Tuesday” crap that interrupts Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars? I just don’t get it. I mean, I do get that American Eagle has paid the CW money to sponsor the shows. And this gives them the awesome chance to let some airheads (”aerie” get it?) say clever things like, “Wow, that was a funny pop culture reference Veronica just made. What did it mean?” And “I think Luke and Christopher really got into that fight over Lorelai, don’t you?” It drives me nuts every single week. In fact, I usually let the Tivo get going for 10 minutes or so before I start watching so I can skip it. What do you think about those “Aerie Girls” love them or loathe them?

Some prattle to tide us over

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

It will be more than a week before we see a new episode. It seems like it has been forever. Next week “Merry Fisticuffs” will run again, up against the premiere of “American Idol.” In the meantime, it isn’t much but here’s a tidbit from Ausiello at TV Guide:

Lorelai is going to go out of her way to help Luke in his custody battle for April.

Question: Is the death you were referring to on Gilmore Girls going to be Paul Anka?— Jill B.
Ausiello: No, but you’re close.

Question: Is there any new Gilmore Girls scoop? Perhaps word on when Lorelai will make her first appearance in Luke’s diner again?— Katie
Ausiello: Sookie brings her some coffee from the diner, and they talk about whether that’s weird for Lorelai. Does that count?

Krysten Ritter Interview

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Kyrsten Ritter plays Lucy, Rory’s eccentric new friend and Marty’s girlfriend this season. She was recently interviewed TV Guide. Here’s what she had to say about Gilmore Girls and what else she is working on right now.

TVGuide.com: You’re very busy! Gilmore Girls is on break, but you have guest spots on ‘Til Death and Justice. Tell me about those roles.
Krysten Ritter: On ‘Til Death, I’m playing the daughter of Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher — they’re my favorite TV parents so far. I come home for the holiday during a college break. And on Justice, I play this woman who kidnaps a baby because she thinks that it’s being abused. So two very, very different roles. I’m very excited that they’re both airing the same week. I feel like I’m taking over the television.

TVGuide.com: Well, you have definitely stirred the pot at Yale on Gilmore Girls. Lucy is peppy and full of life. Do you relate to her?
Ritter: You know, I really like her boots. [Laughs] I actually got to take them home! [As for] if I relate to her… I don’t really know how to answer that, to be honest.

TVGuide.com: Do you feel like you slip into the role easily?
Ritter: When I auditioned, the main requirement for that show is to talk really fast, and when I did it, they’re like, “OK, great. Faster!” I was like, “What? Are you kidding me?” It’s very challenging in its own right, because a lot of the dialogue is also non sequitur, so you’re all over the place and going a mile a minute. Lauren Graham (Lorelai) does it beautifully.

TVGuide.com: It just flows right out of her mouth!
Ritter: I know. When I got my first script, I was like, “Well, this is all going to get cut out anyway,” and then my manager, who also represents Alexis [Bledel] (Rory), was like, “Krysten, every single word is going to be on the show.” I was like, “Really? I don’t see how it’s possible!” It’s only because they talk that fast!

TVGuide.com: Do you know anybody who actually talks that fast?
Ritter: No!

TVGuide.com: I have one friend who actually does, and I have to ask her three times what she’s saying.
Ritter: I have a friend who’s an actress and she talks really fast, but not Gilmore Girls fast. I think it definitely sets the show apart and maybe has a lot to do with why the show’s successful.

TVGuide.com: I talked to Wayne Wilcox a few weeks ago, and he was very sweet! It’s so funny how your character calls him “Boyfriend” instead of by his name, Marty. How’s the chemistry on set?
Ritter: I love him, I think he’s wonderful. I was actually just reading for a Broadway play yesterday at the Roundabout [Theatre], where he’s performing [in Suddenly Last Summer] right now, and when I got there, they were like, “Oh, we were going to have Wayne come over! Your ‘Boyfriend’!”

TVGuide.com: In the last episode, it was revealed that Rory and Marty know each other. Will he and Lucy call it quits? Will Lucy and Rory make up soon?
Ritter: You can’t ask me these questions when I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell! I think Lucy needed a little time to process; [Rory and Marty] both have a lot of explaining to do. In my opinion, Lucy was really the victim, and I don’t think she overreacted — I would have jumped to the same conclusion. But yes, I think they will be friends. I don’t know if she and Marty will work it out, because it’s kind of a jerky thing that he did. They seemed so cute together and like they were so much in love, so it’s kind of hard to tell. If it were me, I’d be like, “Hit the road, Jack.”

TVGuide.com: What else is on your plate?
Ritter: I have quite a bit going on, being bicoastal. I’m hoping I can stay home for a couple of weeks before I start ‘Til Death again, but I’ve also got a couple of things up my sleeve in the writing and development area. I’ve actually just sold my first pilot script this month, so once they lock down the deal and do all the negotiations, I will have a writing deadline. So that will be a big project and a huge weight on my shoulders for a little while.

TVGuide.com: Can you tell us what it’s about and for which network?
Ritter: It’s loosely based on my experience being from the farm and being scouted as a model, and my experience living in the models’ apartments, actually. I’m pretty psyched about it! Since the deal’s not done, I probably shouldn’t say [the network]. I guess I can give you a hint — they aired episodes of My So-Called Life, which is my favorite show.

TVGuide.com: I loved that show. I’m so sad that it’s gone.
Ritter: Me, too. But I feel like because it’s so small and it’s this cult thing, it’s almost better, like Arrested Development. I was going to say that My So-Called Life is the best show ever, but I’m starting to think that Dexter is. It’s amazing, my favorite thing ever.

Krysten also talks about her guest spots on Justice and Veronica Mars. Check out the rest of the article here.

Because I Said So

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Lauren Graham’s new movie, “Because I Said So” will open in theaters on February 3. This is a bit earlier than originally expected. Lauren costars with Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore and Piper Pearbo. Diane plays the mother of Lauren, Piper and Mandy with a mission to set Mandy’s character up with the perfect man. It looks like a fantastic movie! I can’t wait to see it!

Check out the official movie site.

We still have a few weeks to go before the next new episode. “Santa’s Secret Stuff” will air on January 23. Here’s a bit of info on the episode: Lorelai and Rory will run into April and Luke . Rory returns from London after the holidays. Luke asks Lorelai to write a character recommendation letter for his custody battle with Anna over April.

Rumors

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

There is a rumored death coming in the next few weeks. From everything I’ve read it will not be Richard. We know he’s got a health scare coming up, so it’s good to know it isn’t him. Mike Ausiello at TV Guide reported that it is “supposed to be funny and it won’t be sad.” He also went on to say it will not be Kirk. So any guesses? Maybe Paul Anka or another one of Babette’s cats? (Remember Cinamonn’s wake?)

Sally Struthers

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

Here’s part of an interview Sally Struthers did with TV Guide. I love that they asked about Babette and Gilmore Girls!

TVGuide.com: I’m a big Gilmore Girls fan.
Struthers: Oh, don’t you love that show?

TVGuide.com: I really do.
Struthers: The dialogue, the dialogue! It’s so fast and clever and dry.

TVGuide.com: But I’m disappointed that Babette hasn’t been in many episodes so far this season.
Struthers: Well, let’s see, they’ve probably shot 10 shows by now, and I’ve been in four of them, so that’s pretty good.

TVGuide.com: Will she be showing up in future episodes?
Struthers: You know something? I don’t know! When you’re not on a contract as a series regular, you don’t know when the phone’s going to ring. But I always look forward to it, and they always accommodate me, because quite often I’m somewhere doing a musical or a play, like I’m doing now.

TVGuide.com: Because yours is a recurring role, do you get to spend a lot of time with some cast members?
Struthers: Well, my scenes usually are with one of the leads — Lorelai and Rory or Luke, but there are some cast members I’ve never met! [Laughs]

TVGuide.com: Really?
Struthers: Yeah, I had someone come up to me once and say, “Hi, I’m on Gilmore Girls, too, but I’ve never been in a scene with you.” It’s shot like a movie — with one camera — and it takes eight working days to shoot one episode. [There's] a day or two that you go in to film your scenes, and it isn’t the same day that some other characters [are filming]. The kids who Rory goes to school with at Yale? I haven’t met any of them!

TVGuide.com: Well, Babette knows everything that’s going on. Is it fun to play a town gossip?
Struthers: It is! And I don’t know if you saw the season opener when she talks about herself and says that she has a loud voice and people tell her she needs to talk softer? She’s even loud when she says it. [In Babette's voice] “I need to talk softer!” I know somebody named Marissa, who has a very loud voice, so there’s a little bit of Marissa in the character I’m playing, and there’s a lot of Ruth Gordon.

TVGuide.com: Babette really cracks me up. I love when she gets on Luke’s nerves, or asks Lorelai a million questions. There’s something overwhelming but also endearing about her.
Struthers: Yeah. I just love all these characters. When you’re young, they try to fit you into some sort of ingenue role, but I was never that because I’ve always been a comedian. So as you get older and they offer you these delicious, quirky roles, you just jump into them with glee. They’re much more interesting to play, usually, than the lead… and a lot less pressure!

TVGuide.com: Do you have a favorite episode?
Struthers: I think maybe when our cat, Cinnamon, died, and we had the wake at Babette’s house. I loved doing that one, because everything was scaled down to her height.

TVGuide.com: Have you heard anything about this being the last season?
Struthers: Oh, rumors galore. It’s totally up in the air, and I don’t think it’s going to be decided until the spring. And then it’s still going to be up to the CW — whether or not they would be willing to let it go forward with one or two characters missing and take the show in a whole other direction.

Ok, that last answer is very interesting. She makes it sound like some people are really not interested in returning. I wonder if it is Alexis Bledel. If the show doesn’t get another year, I have a feeling it will be because she had an itch to do more. I used to think Lauren would be the hold out, but if they back the Brinks truck up to her door… Who knows for sure? I guess we’ll see.

Happy New Year!

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

An Open Letter to David Rosenthal and everyone writing scripts for Gilmore Girls:

Hi. It’s a brand new year. Let’s start fresh, shall we? Let’s hurry that divorce up for our girl Lorelai. Once she’s divorced, don’t send her straight back to Luke, give her a little time to figure out that he’s the one for her. And while we’re at it, let’s go ahead and bring Lorelai’s spunk back. She’s been much too bland since Amy left. Spice up the conversations and definitely pick up a copy of at least Entertainment Weekly to brush up on those pop culture references. Two Gwyneth Paltrow references in a single episode is totally weak.

Snap Rory out of it, too. Hasn’t she always wanted to be Christiane Amanpour? Set her on that path. No more dying her hair red and crying on the bathroom floor about what is she going to do with her life. Figure it out and get her back on track. Speaking of Rory – she needs her best friend Lane. More Lane, please. I know it is too late to undo that twins storyline, but at least let us see Mrs. Kim interfering with Lane and Zach. And yes, Rory has another friend, too, PARIS. Paris has been one of the few bright, consistently funny spots on the show this season.

April – yeah, go ahead and ship her off to Arizona but give Luke visitation rights and all. The less of her the better. Speaking of Luke, start fighting for Lorelai! Stand up and do something about losing her instead of moping around.

As for Chris, sorry, but it is time for bye bye. He’s done enough damage and served his purpose, so send him away.

Where are the locals? We need more Miss Patty, Babette and Kirk. Heck, even a little Taylor wouldn’t hurt, either.

And of the upmost importance – more Richard and Emily and more Friday night dinners. I MISS the GILMORES, not the new Haydens, but the GILMORES.

Oh, and let Rina Mimoun write another episode or 9. Can’t wait to see what happens next –
