Kelly Bishop talks about “A Chorus Line”

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

I love Kelly Bishop, seriously love her. I think she is as much a part of the glue that holds Gilmore Girls together as Lauren and Alexis. I was excited to see her get a little shout out in Entertainmentn Weekly in the “Who I Was Then” section.

I had been in the business about 10 years. I had quit chorus work — I wanted principal work. I’d given myself two years to either move up higher or chuck it all. I didn’t have much money and it literally never crossed my mind that I should wait a table or temp — I had to get a dancing job. This [role, Sheila] came along and I thought, ”Beautiful. There it is. The open door.” I honestly didn’t care if A Chorus Line was a hit. It was something I believed in, something I thought was wonderful. I didn’t expect everyone to like it; I thought people would say, ”What do they think they’re doing? Nobody cares about dancers.” Most of the story was culled from [our] real lives. ”At the Ballet” is me. The show was an extraordinary experience. And suddenly, I had a Tony award.

Trick or Treat

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

No new Gilmore tonight, so feel free to get out there and trick or treat! Tonight’s ep will be a repeat of the season premiere, “The Long Morrow.” Sweeps start tomorrow. Sweeps months are November, February and May. These are the months that networks and shows go all out to grab the biggest ratings possible. They then use these ratings numbers to set advertising rates for the show. It’s all about the benjamins, people. So look for huge things to happen in Stars Hollow starting next week.

Marty’s back

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Poor scorned Marty. The ever nice guy that Rory just wanted to be friends with returns to Yale and back into Rory’s life. Rumor has it he will act as though he doesn’t even know her.

According to E!:

From Mihee: On Gilmore Girls, I love Rory’s new friends, Lucy and Olivia. It’s about time she started talking to someone other than Paris!

Yes, and I love that Lucy is Gia from the last season of Veronica Mars! And did you hear how Rory’s old pal Marty is going to come back into her life? He’s Lucy’s boyfriend. Très perfecto.

Lauren Graham in Calabasas Magazine

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Lauren is featured in the October/November issue of Calabasas magazine in a photo spread and interview. The interview provides a few interesting things about Lauren:

Her mother left her family to follow a rock and roll dream
One of her half sisters lives with her since their mother died last year
Lauren’s home once belonged to a silent film star who’s life ended tragically (she wouldn’t say who)
She claims again to just be friends with Matthew Perry

Ratings Round Up

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Some good news — our Girls are bringing in good numbers this season. Tuesday’s episode brought in 4.7 million viewers. Continuing the girl power, Veronica Mars brought in 3.3 million. Very solid for both shows. Here’s hoping the ratings stay good and they make Lauren and Alexis a sweet deal to stay another year. I’m not ready to call it a day just yet.

Thoughts on last night’s episode

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Overall, not one of my favorites – it was just missing that zip and zing a bit to me. Where was Luke? Why was he only in the show for 2 seconds at the town meeting? Aren’t we supposed to be seeing his “journey,” too?

I didn’t really like all the Luke bashing. Sure, he messed up BIG TIME last season by not letting Lorelai know about April and then for not letting Lorelai hang out with April for that matter, etc. So I understand that Lorelai has a ton of anger. But remember, at one point, Lorelai said he was “the one” and retreated to her bed when he dumped her after Emily and Richard’s vow renewal fiasco. I know she’s still upset, but I’m upset that strong, independent Lorelai is jumping from Luke to Christopher without so much as a pause. And comparing Chris and Luke is like comparing apples and oranges. Where was Chris all of Rory’s life? Luke was there for much of it.

Aren’t they trying a little too hard to show the perfect happy family with Lorelai, Chris and Rory in the car grooving to “Come A Little Bit Closer”? Has he really, finally grown up?

What did you think?

Picklegate Recap

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Ok, what I’m going to do is give a straight up, opinion free recap of last night’s show. Then I’ll follow with all the opinion you care to read, cool?

Christopher’s ex-wife Sherry wants Gigi to come stay with her in Paris for a couple of months. She sent Chris a long letter, complete with a wax seal and all. Sherry calls and talks to a four year old Gigi for half an hour then makes her case to Chris. Chris agrees to send Gigi to Sherry and decides to send the nanny with the little girl.

Lorelai doesn’t like this plan one bit, but decides to keep her mouth shut. On the way to Friday night dinner at Richard and Emily’s, they have a fight and Lorelai tells Chris to reconsider sending Gigi or at least take her himself. The tension escalates through dinner and finally Lorelai and Chris retreat to the bathroom to discuss. Lorelai tells Chris she is sorry and she assures him that she doesn’t compare his leaving Rory at 16 to Sherry, a grown adult, choosing to leave Gigi. Chris is angry that she assumes this is how he feels and why he is upset.

They eventually make up in the living room and Lorelai agrees to go to Paris with Chris and Gigi. Lorelai pulls out her cell phone and proudly shows off Emily’s jailbird photos.

Meanwhile, Logan flies home for a business meeting and surprises Rory with dinner on the roof. The next morning he leaves for his meeting. After successfully overtaking the company, he calls Rory to come celebrate with him. Rory goes to Manhattan and finds herself with Logan, 2 guys he works with and one female Bobbi. Rory sat in awkward silence as the group laughing and carried on with inside jokes. After the evening, Rory told Logan she was upset and he told her he was missed her, too, and he left.

Back to Picklegate – a train carrying pickles derailed and the stench covered the time. A town meeting was called and cheap Taylor wanted to leave the pickles to neighboring Woodbridge to clean up. Luke, among others, stood up and argued and Taylor agreed to clean the mess up.

Just another quirky day in Stars Hollow.

The David Rosenthal Interview

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

SPOILERS COMING PEOPLE, avert your eyes if you don’t want to know!

Michael Ausiello finally posted his interview with GG Exec Producer David Rosenthal. Here you go:

Ausiello: Now that the secret is out, are you worried about a backlash from Luke and Lorelai fans?
David Rosenthal: No, I’m not worried about any backlash. I’m really excited about the story lines this year. I think it’s gonna make for a really interesting season and I hope the fans will stay with us and follow Lorelai through this journey she’s on.

Ausiello: Luke and Lorelai fans are not going to be thrilled with this development.
Rosenthal: I am a Luke and Lorelai fan as well. This is not an anti-Luke and Lorelai development. Luke and Lorelai are right now on separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated. They’re still very much a part of each other’s lives and will be in the future in significant and profound ways.

Ausiello: How does this elopement figure into Lorelai’s journey?
Rosenthal: I think it’s just a natural outgrowth of what’s been going on with Lorelai this season and her reaction to last year and everything that happened with Luke. Obviously, [all the] episodes [leading up to the elopement] haven’t aired yet, but I think you’ll see their relationship building over the next [several] episodes. Christopher and Lorelai have a very deep, long history. This isn’t just some guy in her life. This is the father of her only child and a man who she’s known for virtually her entire life; they’re very connected. I think people will see sides of Christopher that they’ve never seen before. It’s a more complex relationship than people are used to seeing between Lorelai and Chris. The times before when Christopher and Lorelai have gotten together, something has always gotten in the way — whether Chris wasn’t ready, or Lorelai wasn’t ready, or Chris was having a child or whatever it was. Things have really kept them from exploring their relationship and their connection and what they have together. I felt like this year was really an opportunity to give them a chance to do that. And, I gotta say, they’re great together. It’s been really fun working with them.

Ausiello: This isn’t really a traditional, “Let’s run off to Paris and elope” kind of thing, is it?
Rosenthal: It is not. But I don’t want to spoil anything more than that. But no, they do not run off to Paris [intending] to elope. That is not why they go to Paris.

Ausiello: Can you talk a little about the aftermath of this event?
Rosenthal: It’s a very small town, so obviously Lorelai coming back with a husband — and not the husband they were expecting her to have — will have a profound impact on everybody.

Ausiello: How does Luke find out?
Rosenthal: I don’t want to spoil that. But that will not happen off camera; I can promise you that.

Ausiello: There are only so many times the Christopher card can be played. Is it fair to say that if it doesn’t work out this time, it’s not going to work out?
Rosenthal: Absolutely. It’s all or nothing.

Ausiello: Are you writing the show as if this is the last season?
Rosenthal: No. We have an arc for the season. We have a plan for 22 episodes. If it ends up being the last season, I’m very comfortable with where we end up and I think it will be a really satisfying end to the series. But it’s also a start of a new beginning for next season. I’d be excited to do another season, but I think that what we have planned for the end of the season could certainly wrap up the series if that’s what’s called for.

Ausiello: If this is the last season, would you be open to the idea of Amy coming back and being involved in that last episode?
Rosenthal: Uh… yeah, of course.

Ausiello: But it’s nothing that has been talked about.
Rosenthal: No. That’s not something that we’ve gotten into or even discussed at this point. The last time Amy and I talked, she wished me luck and I thanked her and told her I hoped she would continue to be proud of the show.

Ausiello: You haven’t heard anything from her in terms of feedback?
Rosenthal: I have not.

Ausiello: There’s a rumor going around that Richard’s going to die.
Rosenthal: No! Absolutely not! I promise you! No one’s going to die in Stars Hollow. Nobody.

Ausiello: What’s next for Rory and Logan?
Rosenthal: Deepening and intensifying. They’re going to be dealing with more adult issues and more adult problems. And while that will create some conflict, it will also give them an opportunity to grow closer as a couple. But there’s a question of, “Is this the kind of relationship that Rory sees going the distance, or is this just the college boyfriend?” Those are the questions that are going to come up for Rory this year. But there’s a lot in store for those two.

Ausiello: Marty’s coming back next month. Can you say anything about how he’s going to be reintroduced?
Rosenthal: We have a cool way of bringing him back into the show. Kind of a surprising way, which I don’t want to spoil. It brings up interesting issues for Rory and Logan, and I think it’s a nice story arc for Rory. We’re happy to have Mr. Wilcox back on the show; he’s really terrific.

Ausiello: How long will he be around?
Rosenthal: He’ll be in and out throughout the season.

Ausiello: Might there be another marriage this season?
Rosenthal: God, I can’t make any promises. I don’t know at this point.

Ausiello: So it’s possible?
Rosenthal: Yeah, it’s possible there could be another wedding this season.

I’m so bummed. I’m a huge Luke/Lorelai fan. I don’t hate Chris, but I do hate that they are hastily marrying them. It just doesn’t seem right to me. What do you think?
